How to Create an Atmosphere for Meditation
Main Scripture: Joshua 1:8
«“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein…” — Joshua 1:8 (KJV)»
It is scriptural to meditate.
Meditation is an important part of our walk with God. It gives us the opportunity to slow down, focus our hearts, and give attention to the Word of God.
I recommend the morning hours for meditation, especially when the atmosphere is still calm and quiet. Before the activities of the day begin, find a place where you can be alone with God and give yourself to His Word.
You can play a slow, gentle worship song to help create an atmosphere of stillness and focus. Then, pick up a Scripture and begin to look at it. Read it slowly. Think about it. Don’t be in a hurry to move from one verse to another.
Stay with that Scripture.
As you continue to look at it and think about it, you begin to get deeper into the Word. You begin to see things you may not have noticed at first. You begin to understand the Scripture beyond just reading the words.
For example, you can take a Scripture such as Romans 8:11:
«“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” — Romans 8:11 (KJV)»
Take that Scripture and meditate on it.
Read it again. Think about what it means that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you.
What does it mean for that same Spirit to dwell in you? What does it mean that He can quicken your mortal body? What does the presence of the Spirit of God in you mean?
Don’t just read the Scripture and move on.
Look into it. Think about it. Stay with it until the Word begins to open up to you. As you continue to meditate, you begin to travel into the Scripture. You begin to interact with what you are reading, and the Word becomes more real to you.
As you go deeper into meditation, you begin to commune with a Deity.
This is why it is important to create an atmosphere where you can give your full attention to God. Find a quiet place. Remove distractions. Take your time with the Word.
As you continue, you will begin to get deeper into the Scripture, and you will begin to discover the meaning and understanding contained within it.
Meditation is not simply reading the Bible. It is taking the Word, staying with it, thinking deeply about it, and allowing it to become alive in your consciousness.
